Let them eat cake

It's on!

The great crab cake search of the summer has been begun.

Eric Ruth and I are sifting through your suggestions and comments. I began the quest with a trip to Seasons Pizza, a surprising (well, to me) suggestion from a number of readers. That's one tasty broiled cake ($13.99). Photo to the right was taken by Bob Craig, another crab cake fanatic.

I'll keep you updated on the progress. We'll publish the results of the search later this summer.

Eric might not like G and M crabcakes if he wants a crunchy topping. They have no coating at all.

I find it interesting that the crabcakes I had at The Farmhouse were stringy and loaded with filler, yet others say they are all lumps. My lumps must have emigrated to the crabcakes other people have had. I needed to floss after eating mine!

Have a fun time doing your crabcake testing. What a great assignment.

The Farmhouse in Avondale PA? Have never had filler in them.

That is a crab cake sandwich in your photo, not a crabcake. If you are going to do a story about them, at least get it right from the start. Don't waste time eating them on rolls. You may as well eat the ones with tons of filler.

I'd like to see Eric and Patricia do a tasting of raw crab meat versus pasteurized. I'd also like them to ask the restaurants to disclose what type of meat they use and where it comes from.

Many higher end restaurants use Asian pasteurized crab meat, not fresh Maryland crab meat.

Everyone picking Kellys as having the best crab cakes are the same folks who think Seasons Pizza is good food. They are blue collar folks who have not, if ever, been anywhere better. Much like a friend of mine who ordered shrimp cocktail at a 5 star restaurant and was upset that they did not receive a ice cream sundae bowl of peel and eat stashed in cocktail sauce.

for us blue collar who choose to take a scenic trip down route 9 for great seafood meal reasonably priced great service and have been to so many high priced low quality places i say to you stay up town with your obvious snotty attitude and waste your maybe hard earned money better yet keep the silver spoon in your mouth because you would not fit in or be welcome

Is driving down Rt. 9 a scenic one? I've been to Kellys and I hardly think driving through swamp land is scenic, yet alone the view of the nuclear reactor nearby. I think their food is pretty good but let's be honest here. Its one of those hole in the wall type places that people love to go to for a cheap and decent meal. But, they have good crab cakes which have just a small amount of filler in them. I've had much better in other spots around here.

Christophers Crabcakes at the Farmers Market located in Boothwyn PA are the best crab cakes I had in a long time and you cant beat the price.
