Farmer's markets winding down

Los Angeles Times food writer and author Russ Parsons recently spoke about his book "How to Pick a Peach: The Search for Flavor from Farm to Table" (Houghton Mifflin, 2007) at Longwood Gardens.

Delaware farmer's markets are winding down for the season, but several are still open through October.
Here's a list of those markets as well as places where you can pick-your-own apples and pumpkins.
The state Department of Agriculture also lists farm markets by county at www.delawarefresh.com.
Parsons' book is packed with great information, tips and recipes. He divides the book into seasons and tells you how to choose the produce that is grown during a particular season. This is the kind of handy information that consumers eat up.

After his talk, Parsons took several questions from the audience. Someone asked his opinion about CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes, where buyers receive a weekly or monthly supply of produce, flowers, fruits, eggs, milk, meats, or any sort of different farm products

"Well, you never know what you'll get," he said, adding, "You'll probably learn more about kale than you ever wanted to know."
