Blogging about The Big Apple

Had some time off last week and decided to spend part of it in New York.

I love New York almost anytime of year, but after facing brutal winds on Fifth Avenue, I made a mental note that my next visit should be during warmer weather.

It was so teeth-chattering frigid even the fashionistas were bundled up in puffy coats and goofy hats. I pulled out my fuzzy white ear muffs (that look like two geriatric cats have nestled on my noggin), plopped them on and didn't care one iota what I looked like. My fashion sense - and good judgment - tends to disappear faster than hot cocoa during miserably cold weather.

So that's probably why I ordered a glass of champagne at the St. Regis Hotel's King Cole Bar - you must see the refurbished King Cole mural by artist Maxfield Parrish (he studied under Howard Pyle and was inspired by N.C. Wyeth) - instead of sparkling wine. Didn't ask the price. And, my friends, that is always a big mistake. The price of thinking I was some du Pont trust fund baby came back to haunt me when we got the bill. (The cold sapped my sanity. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.) Two glasses of French bubbly and an iced tea was more than 50 beans. Gulp. At least it was good. And we got three different kinds of nuts and pretzels and could escape from the cold for a while. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Some highlights of the trip:

- Speaking of fashion, The International Center of Photography has a couple of very cool exhibitions. Loved the candid images displayed in the exhibit, "This is Not a Fashion Photograph."

- I read about the Staley-Wise gallery in The New Yorker and decided to check out the free Mary Ellen Mark exhibit. Mark shoots unguarded behind-the-scenes photos on movie sets. Her photo of Edgar Bergen taking puppet Charlie McCarthy out of a suitcase made me laugh (see above) and I spent several minutes studying this black-and-white of Christina Ricci on the set of Tim Burton's movie "Sleepy Hollow" trying to figure out how the photographer shot the photo without being reflected in the two mirrors.

- Did a double take after seeing an almost naked guy change his clothes - at a very busy intersection - in the back of a taxi cab. Don't see that often in Wilmington. Cabs in Wilmington, that is.

- The Valentine Day storefront window display of hearts on Fifth Avenue - all made out of pink condoms.
I'll get to the restaurants I visited tomorrow - but here's a sneak peek: Prune, Balthazar and Resto.

Mary Ellen Mark, not Marker.
