Joe gives Delaware shout-outs: UPDATED

During the debate, Joe Biden gave several Delaware shout-outs, including Wilmington's Union Street...
Maybe, I heard this wrong, or misunderstood, but I think he mentioned Katie's restaurant......

Wilmington used to have a Katie's restaurant - way back in the day - and it was in Little Italy, as is Union Street, but I'm almost positive Katie's wasn't on Union Street.
And it hasn't been Katie's in, well, years. Maybe he said Kozy's - as in Kozy Korner?

UPDATED ON FRIDAY: OK, here's the deal, last night Biden did mention Katie's restaurant and Union Street.

But I checked The News Journal archives this morning and, well, don't plan on trying to find it on Union Street anytime soon. And I wonder if the Katie's today, which is now actually Wings to Go at Katies, is the same Katie's that Joe remembers.....

Katie's was at the corner of Sixth and Scott streets in Wilmington's Little Italy neighborhood. (Not Union Street.) It had been a local and much-loved institution, well known for its rich, thick Italian gravy (tomato sauce) and spaghetti. It was opened in 1936 by Silvio Spiezio, who later sold it in 1945. The Fugilino family owned and ran the restaurant for years until it was sold in the 1981 after Frances Mae Fugilino's death.

Katie's then changed hands again in 1985, but new owners kept the venerable name.

But it eventually changed hands again - at least 10 years ago, maybe even more like 15 years ago (SEE UPDATE BELOW) - and was renamed C.J. Bart's, which according to features reporter Ryan Cormier in a May 2008 News Journal story became " a spot with an unsavory reputation as a magnet for panhandlers and worse."

Cormier reported that Nate Johnson, owner of the Wilmington and Dewey Beach Wings to Go restaurants, recently took over CJ Bart's and renamed it Wings to Go at Katies "as an homage to its former residents.
(Photo above was taken in May 2008 by News Journal photographer William Bretzger of the crowd hanging at the new "Wings to Go at Katies.")

"The first thing we did is clear out the riffraff. If you come in my restaurant, you're not going to be bothered by people asking you for change or to buy them a beer," Johnson told The News Journal "You're protected in there. It is nothing like C.J. Barts. That place is dead and gone forever."
***NEW UPDATE: Ryan Cormier just spoke to Johnson and he said that Katie's closed in the 1980s.

Not only is Wings to Go at Katies a franchise of the local chicken-wings favorite, but there's a full bar, video games and a spot for bands to play."

"We've always been looking for a spot to do wings and beer, since they go so naturally together," said Johnson.

According to Cormier, "the sounds of jamming rock bands now fill the air surrounding the bar Wednesday through Saturday nights. Sometimes, blues bands make an appearance as well."

Maybe Biden did mean to mention the Kozy Korner, which is on Union Street? Or perhaps, he should have given a shout-out to Mrs. Robino's or Walter's Steakhouse, two Union Street restaurant institutions?

Yes, he did say Katie's and it has not been around for many many years...and was never on Union Street.

But Joe is always allowed to get away with these things and his "fibs".

Katies was on Lincoln Street - 25-30 years ago. it was owned by the Fugalino family.

And CNN has changed it from "go down Union Street with me in Wilmington AND go to Katie's Restaurant" to "go down Union Street with me in Wilmington OR go to Katie's Restaurant"

MSM covering their candidates' flubs, as usual. I just watched the video again, and it's definitely "and"...

Yeah, and I don't recollect a Home Depot on Union Street either. duh. Must be all that botox swimming in his skull.

I used to be a waiter at Katie's restaurant, and I picked up on Biden's mistake right away. A Wilmington institution reknowned for its homemade pasta, the restaurant was sold about 20 years ago. Biden used to come in once a month or so. It was on 6th and Lincoln St.

Biden actually lied thru his teeth on quite a few issues ...

Also, no one has ever thrown Hexbollah out of Lebanon, Sen Biden!

This is less of big deal as Biden's repeated claim that the US has "spent less in Afghanistan in seven years than we spend in a month in Iraq."

Spending on the war in Afghanistan since 2001 has been $172 Billion. Spending in Iraq is a little under $10 Billion a month. In other words, Biden's number is off by something like 2000%.

Anonymous said...

"This really compares to Palin not knowing how many troops we have in Iraq or who is leading them in Afghanistan..."

No, lying about a restaurant in your HOMETOWN doesn't compare with Palin not knowing the troop level. But at least she's not off by about 2000% on the spending difference between Afghanistan and Iraq as Joe is. Biden, as usual, displays his skill as a gasbag, lying lawyer. And that's being nice.

"yeah let's be pedantic about every stupid anecdote you betcha *winks at camera*"

totally, i mean, fdr didn't have to put up with these stupid gotchas in 1929 during the depression!

Anonymous said...

Biden is Biden. he gets away with it because nobody is taking him seriously anymore. As for troop levels in Afghanistan... here is some food for chewing... The Soviets had about 200.000 troops in Afghanistan at the peak of their adventure in 1980s and it didn't help them much. Troop numbers don't count much if you don't have the right strategy, right tactic, the backing of the politicians and the public. I think palin hit the nail when she said we need to go into those villages and set up pernament outposts and establish the contact with the locals. They are sick and tired of war and each time we leave the Talibans come and start terrorizing them over again. So she was more right than self-proclaimed expert Biden.

By the way: Delaware meet our new state militia after 11/4/2008. :-))

For the record, Palin did flub the Afghanistan general's name: McKiernan. But she went second on that answer. Biden went first on that question and called him "our commanding general in Afghanistan" three times.

Presumably because he couldn't remember the general's name.

So what's the deal here Delaware? So a whole lot of anonymous Delawareans dislike the hometown Senator so much for his "gasbag lying" about the location of a tiny restaurant in a small town, or about some magical figures on war costs (that neither side really has a grasp of) that you would prefer to vote the McCain Palin ticket? Am i reading this right? Obama & Biden may not have all the answers and may speak in their own brand of twisted truths, falsehoods or lies... but at worst, aren't you ready for a different group of liars?

Question here for the above-listed Delaware cogniscenti: Let's say someone you thought you trusted put a blindfold on you and told you to run straight ahead. Upon doing so, you ran face-first into a brick wall...and for some reason, perhaps still dazed, you then decided to back up and run into the same wall again (only this time harder). After this second encounter, would you then not try turning around and going the other way? I mean, you may run into another wall... BUT AT LEAST ITS A DIFFERENT WALL!

Obama, Biden, and the Democrats may not have all the answers...they may even do a terrible job (i for one do not think we can do any worse)... but at least its a different direction! Please vote the Democratic ticket or go buy a helmet with whatever savings you have left becuase (stare into camera) "i betcha that doggone wall (wink) will hurt the Ameeerican peeeoples heads real bad, dagnabbit." (wink, smile)

Smilin' Joe made a typical Biden mistake probably confusing the Corner with Katies. But that's OK.

What's not OK is how he covers BS by being completely, totally emphatic and assertive when doing so. When he really, really emphasizes something you need to dissect what he said because he is usually full of it when he does that.

Thirty five years in congress will do that to you. They can't distinguish the truth from a lie.
Is it true he is going to retire if they don't win?

Bottom line is we are sick of politicians dipping into our pockets, lying to us, living under different laws and telling us it's "complicated".

Common people built America and common people will toss these bums out...all of them.

Who cares if Biden said Katies, or if its no longer on Union street, or even around anymore. How about focusing the issues that matter instead of trying to find little errors. All Republicans can do is find a little error like this and pounce on it as if its the biggest Gaff since Bush's end of the Iraq War speech on a Naval Ship! Sheesh!

I have been indirectly seeing the senator on/off since the 4th grade, but never directly met the guy. All I usually see of him is marching openly in parades and waiting at the Wilmington train station platform while I am on the train from Claymont bound for Newark for 7 years until my job transfered to Wilm-just two blocks from the t-s-only using the bus not the train anymore. Why do the rest of family had some direct contact with him and his wife while i didn't?

That bill must pass the house to help main street America. Any senators that vote against than bill did so for political reason to get reelected. The senators that vote for the bill are really for the people in Main Street. A lot of state will take big hit economically if that bill fails the house again; especially in the banking industry big mask layoff will happen. Without that bill, poor people cannot get credit to buy houses, cars, or get loans to go to college. It is time for these republicans’ senators in Washington to start working on behalf of the people that put them in power. So far these republicans showed us that they are only care about getting reelected. ‘’There was a net loss of 159,000 jobs in September, the ninth straight month the U.S. economy has lost jobs. The August job loss was revised to 73,000 jobs, taking year-to-date job losses to 760,000.’’(Chris Insidor October, 3, 2008)

What's with all the Biden bashing? I'm willing to bet that no one posting here can name at least one thing he's done to hurt you. Who cares that he mentioned a name of a restaurant incorrectly? Who cares that he didn't remember the name of as Afghanistan General? Who cares that he has memories of shopping at a local Home Depot? I've seen and talked to him plenty of times while shopping at the Acme on Centreville Road and he's quite fluent and articulate in speaking.

There's not a single person alive that can say they have never lied or told a fib at some point and time in their life.

Keep in mind that he's being coached on his speeches. He's just the speaker. All nominees have speech writers.

Also, it's not only that we are electing a President but we are ultimately electing the people who will serve on his staff. The President has very limited power and the Vice President has even less power. The real power lies with the people.

Hey Buffalo,NY dude...welcome to Delaware. This is the kind of stuff that we care about and the kind of stuff that we think Biden should get right if he's going to mention it on national tv. Fact of the matter is, he didn't know that Katie's shut down 25 years ago, because that was probably the last time that he was in Little Italy, because he's been spending all of his time in Greenville and going to Buckley's for dinner.

Great find!

When he was spouting facts she said something about seeing after fact check today....This put pie on Katies face, not that anyone thought she was a journalist anyway.

I wrote to CBS to inform them I was really upset that I wasted my time watching the Couric interview with Joe Biden. It was disrespectful to the entire viewing audience. Katie Couric proved she was incapable of interviewing Biden as she didnt have a grasp on the facts. But then again, Biden never lets facts get in his way.
The Home Depot is most likely out on the Kirkwood Highway out by Prices Corner.

when I was younger my family would go to Katies's restaurant and I thought it was on Union Street but my mom told me today that it wasn't on Union Street and I thought Mama Robino's was on 7th and Scott St. And I've been an Delawarean all my life. So what's the big deal?

Anonymous said...

I don't think it's the location, it's the fact that Biden claims to spend a lot of time in a place that doesn't exist. He just made it up - like when he took Neil Kinnock's life story practically verbaitm and said it was his, or when he made up a tale about going to law school on an academic scholarship, or when he expalined how he worked hard to get his grades into the top half of law school. He tells these tales with such wonderful conviction and sincerity -- but they are all lies -- he just makes things up and seems to really believe what he makes up. That seems borderline delusional to me.

Let's get this straight, Sarah Palin was winking at her family in the audience when she made a comment about them. The Corrupted Media hate her and will make a federal case against her just because she did not implode last night.

Biden, along with being out of touch with what restaurant is or is not in operation, also said the First Amendment details duties of the Vice President. I don't THEENK so . . .

Remember please that few of us have as high of an IQ as Joe Biden. He told us that in 1988 when he claimed to be an academic superstar (before his mediocre transcript was released). He also told us that the "Biden's were coal miners .. ." -- but that was actually the British Kinnock's story that Ol' Joe stole. Thos videos are amazing -- he just stole another guy's life story.

It's not just that he lies, it's that he lies SO well that you think he really believes the stuff he makes up. That is a bit scary. But there is no better way to hone the art of lying with sincerity than 35 years in the Senate.

I see the Obamabots are furiously scrambling to treat this as "just a minor" issue, nothing important. Come on people! In an attempt to appear all "folksy," ol' Just Joe told a whopper, pretending that he regularly goes someplace to be with the regular folks. His dropping of a name that no longer exists in the locale(and hasn't for many years) proves he's lying about it. Now, I realize that, to the liberal (sorry, "progressive") mind set, what's a little lying in order to get the power to do good things for us all (whether we want it or not?) Still, a man who lies so blatantly about so-called little things (especially when it is so un-necessary) is a man who can't be trusted to be straight with us about anything.

It's not the substance of the lies that is significant – it's the underlying delusion that they reflect. Biden is NOT trying to fool people; he is just incapable of distinguishing reality from his make-believe world. If that doesn’t scare you – fine. I find it terrifying. Joe Biden had a brain tumor a while back. I'm not a doctor, but I think these easily detectible whoppers are not intentional lies - they are delusions.

I really don't care if he ate at Katie's or not ... I really don't care if she winks or not ... Take from the rich to give to the poor. That's socialism Joe! And ... the government handling MY health care ... no thanks -- I believe they've screwed up or corrupted everything they get involved in, i.e., welfare, social security. I want LESS government ... And - it seems to me ... if Obama taxes the "corporations," no one has ever told him the corporations don't pay taxes ... they pass the additional expense down to the consumer and/or hiring freezes. The McCain/Palin ticket isn't the best thing since sliced bread ... they're just a heck of a lot less dangerous than other two fools.

Got to love the accusations of him 'lying'.

Why, exactly, would he lie about that? Does it change the point he was making in any way whatsoever?

No. He was talking about the response you'd get if "you ask anybody in there whether or not the economic and foreign policy of this administration has made them better off in the last eight years". If he'd said a different restaurant, or just said "any of the restaurants there" instead, would that make any difference to his point? No, no it would not. The reference to "Katie's restaurant" is purely for character.

The fact that we'd apparently need a time machine to go to Katie's is irrelevant to the point. He's not literally proposing that everyone goes to Wilmington with him you know.

Now if you want to look at actual serious lies, start with factcheck.org, politifact.com.

The point isn't his memory, the point is that the man blatantly lied about something in order to show that he's so in touch with the people of his state. I hate these politicians that claim to give straight talk and then can't even name a restaurant in their own back yard. I'm completely disgusted by him. Yes, we have the right to question our elected officials, but we also have the responsibility to behave like grown ups and own up to the fact that we are all human - we will make mistakes and we will have successes. All we should ask is that we do both with as much grace as possible.

We will never be in a place where everyone gets along and everyone agrees on everything. If we did, we'd be living in a Eutopian society. But I still believe and hope that we can evolve as human beings to at least respect our fellow man. Clearly, we're not there yet, but I still hope...

To the person who posted this morning starting with the words Albert Einstein....

I am a former elected official and DO understand the responsibility involved.

But Joe makes things up, and repeats them even when he knows they are not true. The worst one was about the truck driver who was driving when Neilia was killed in 1972. He maliciously lied when repeatedly saying that the (now-deceased) driver was drinking. Lying about a dead man is the lowest of the low things one can do.

That is not "being human" or "flubbing the facts". That is just plain evil. What worries me, as someone else said, is that this kind of pathological "straying from the truth" is evidence of a much more serious problem.

Peggy, your post would have credibility if you could take the time to use your shift key. Just another lazy liberal.

How different is John McCain's policy going to be than George Bush's?

Anonymous said...

Well these posts are mostly pretty good. Easy to see who here pay attention. Last question was - how different will McCain policlies to Bush be? Well this is easy. Even if there are the same - BUT NOT! Obama will be 10 fold worse. And something that was not mentioned so far. Is that Biden opposed Gitmo - but never said to move it to Delaware.

The point is he knows how the people in his neighbor get it. Well his neighborhood is Greenville De. (one of the most elite neighborhoods in Delaware). He hasn't been in my neighborhood where Katies is for a long long time. The truth is Joe doesn't get it.

You can argue Katie's all day and night...but McCain/Palin...are going down on Nov 4th.....Bye bye to the wacko Hockey Mom and her Grandpa!!!!!

A poll by CNN and Opinion Research found 51 per cent thought Mr Biden had performed best, with Mrs Palin taking 36 per cent of respondents.

A survey of uncommitted voters for CBS found the split even more pronounced, with Mr Biden on 46, Mrs Palin on 21 and a relatively high proportion stating that neither had impressed or that they could not decide.

When the uncommitted voters were pressed, 18 per cent said they would vote for Barack Obama and Mr Biden following the debate, with only 10 per cent ready to line up for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Another instant poll done by Fox News, which did not allow for such fence-sitting, had the divide between the two candidates at 61 per cent for Mr Biden and 39 per cent for Mrs Palin.

"Or to, you know, actually know what the position of vice president does and how it fits into our government..."

I noticed this too. Biden clearly has no idea on the Constitutional role of the Vice President. And this is the job for which he is interviewing!!

The VP has no constitutional authority except as it relates to the legislative branch. Biden, OTOH, seems to think that the Veep has a role constitutionally, to the Executive.

The reality is, the President is the only executive officer. He could tell the Veep to take a hike and move out of the White House and the Veep couldn't do a thing about it. On the other hand, Ried can't tell Cheney to leave the Senate because Cheney is PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE. Cheney has a $2 Million dollar legislative budget for goodness sake!

And Biden, who has been in the Senate for 35 years, knows none of this.

The man is either an imbecile or one of the biggest liars alive. I personally cannot tell which.

I doubt if Senator Chia Pet, Joe "Plugs" Biden, has been anywhere near a Home Depot. I'll bet his local Home Depot hasn't even seen him in there.

So many people commenting here say that Biden lying is just Biden being Biden. How many who are commenting live in Delaware and why the hell have you all continued to vote him in for so many terms?

Can you believe the rumor:"after the VP debate that Biden would resign due to "illness" and Obama would replace him with Hillary"

Now the news said: Biden cancels events due to family illness...

Are we blindfolded?

To the one talking about running into the same wall. If you think the wall you hit is bad now just wait until nobama raises taxes and starts more give away programs. This wall is called socialism and you "aint" seen nothing yet. Better hurry off to the grocery store and stock up before it is too late.

Who cares about Katies? So what! it doesn't compare to all the lies that have been coming out of Palin's mouth. Lol Oh really now she says she was just kidding about not knowing what the vice president does whatever! She can't even answer questions directly Please! does she think that she is going to wink her way out of every question. Oh yeah Couric was a real bitch because she asked these really hard questions "What do you read to keep up with the news? Palin answer Ahh duh. Please this lady gets on my last nerve. I am all for somebody being down to earth and everything but even her you betchas and her shout outs and her stupid dogonnit phrases are a little much. That seems like really VP behavior to me. lol!! She is a joke!!

I think everyone better start listening to the reports about Obama and his connections with Anti-American groups. If and when he were to get into office, he would just be the newest pilot in a plane headed for two tall buildings. He would be the insider giving those terriorists information. In his past, he was associated with Anti-American groups who were planning to blow up government buildings. Today, he lives a few miles from those same people. Jerimiah Wright preaches God Dam America. Obama sat in that church for over 20 years hearing/learning those teachings. Rev. Wright performed his marriage ceremony and baptized his children. They're close. He also has dealings with Palestinian activists. No wonder he would sit down with leaders of that region without preconditions. He's friends with them. Put it all together. If you vote for him, you are voting for Barak Husein Obama. Don't overlook his connections.

I think Delaware needs to ramp up it's Language Arts instruction in schools. There's some seriously bad grammar and spelling on here! To the poster at 10:48 on 10/3: What are you complaining about? You're post doesn't make sense. Are you mad because you've only seen him through a train window? Sounds like you're in the wrong place at right time.

*wink!* Gosh, Lets just keep Bush in office till we get the economy back on track and finish up this cute little war! *wink!* *smile!*

Uh, no, um, let's not, uh, do that, uh, because that would be, um, racist.

Obama-Palin is winning, McCain-Palin is losing. Biden LIED ABOUT a restaurant??!?!? Oh, My GOD! Meanwhile, McCain can't give a coherent answer to a policy question, and Palin was just condemned by her own legislature for abuse of power (but, temporarily, escaped criminal prosecution). Do you guys get WHY McCain-Palin is losing?

I am voting for Obama and Biden and I don't care if he mispoke about Katies. I would rather have Joe Biden as the Vice president than the Bimbo PitBull from Anchorage. I also think that our Imperial nature in Afghanistan and arming Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban fighters came back to haunt us. This is a lot like the Cheney and Reagan comments about deficits not mattering, to quote Bobby Lee "Sometimes they do"

Wow I can't believe I thought Fox News was leading me somewhere informative. It did give me a laugh though

Joe probably thought he was in Scranton. Oh I forgot his neighborhood is Greenville.

Wow! I didn't realize that Obama and Palin are on the same ticket.

Fuck Noboma and Blo Biden. If anyone votes for this shit head that probably is Constitutional ineligible to hold the office, shame on this country. I may not vote for McCain but I WILL never vote such an anti-American socialist as nobama

Biden's repeated that lie over and over, and his press fans eat it up. You have to search to find the truth, but we always know when something doesn't ring true.

I bet he takes the train every day because something limits him from driving. Maybe he failed his driving test, or had his license revoked...

Where are the real journalists looking for the Who What Where When Why and How with Obama/Biden??

Katie's was on the corner of 6th and Scott streets. Katie and Silvio were my great-grandparents.

Anonymous said...

So I'm wondering? Which is the more egregious
misstatement? A vice president relocating Katie's from Wilmington's Lincoln to Union Street some
20 years after the eatery ceased to exist?
Or might it be a President misleading a nation about the reason behind a war of choice in Iraq
that claimed the lives of nearly 5,000 (and counting) American troops and has cost the nation more than 1/2 trillion dollars (and counting)?
Gosh, some tough choice.
