V-Day dining

There are two times of the year when I absolutely will NOT go out to dinner: Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve.

Let's just call it amateur night, shall we.

OK, so maybe I'm being way too harsh, but I want to enjoy a restaurant and what the kitchen has to offer.

These two holidays - and, I'll also throw in Mother's Day - are way too crowded and there's often a set menu that I usually don't have much interest in ordering from.

Saturday night, with some of my favorite people, I quite happily enjoyed pasta puttanesca, Mark Bittman's chocolate souffle and some other goodies, along with Schramsberg Mirabelle sparkling wine.

It was a great night.

Where did you go? How was dinner?

Add Thanksgiving as another day I will not eat out. I would rather get a turkey dinner prepared by Acme!

My wife and I tend to avoid crowd, and we are going to Hockessin this Saturday (2-21) where UTAGE is now located. Their Valentine's Feast is 5 or 6 courses Japanese meal. I find it is quite interesting.www.oka-restaurant.com

I went somewhere I knew you wouldn't be, rank amateur.

that is getting embarrassing, Campbell.

Who is getting embarrassing?!

Campbell, does that mean you stayed in the restaurant you cook in, Mona Lisa? I wouldn't go there either.
I find it funny you couldn't even answer Ms. Talorico's calls or respond to her request for restaurants you recommend, yet you'll sit and attack her from behind a computer screen.

We have a name for that: coward. And if your a chef: amateur.

How do you even know that's actually the "J Campbell" who wrote the letter? You can use whatever name you want when you comment on here. It's probably just someone pretending to be them. Don't get worked up.

Like you, had friends over. So we, and all of our children, enjoyed a rib roast, wild shrooms in lemon butter, roasted new potatoes, beautiful green beans. Made a borolo/beef stock/butter reduction that was to die for. And for dessert, fried Nutella ravioli. And lots and lots of red wine. Way better than we could have gotten out for any price.

We don't usually go out either but we did and it was terrible. On top of it, we chose a local favorite (Ristorante Marco). They overbooked so our 6:00 reservation turned into 7. They obviously were understaffed. The service was slow to non-existent and the food was below par. What were we thinking?

We went to Ameritage. They did not offer any specials, but I had the "mer et terre". The seafood Bouillabaisse was really good.
