Out of luck with Mexican, in luck with Japanese

Hey all. Hope you had a great food-filled weekend. Took the day off Friday and spent it in the kitchen making French onion soup. Recipe to come soon.

I had dinner Saturday night at Okura Japanese Cuisine in Hockessin. Wonderful shumai (pronounce it shoe-my) - little, juicy pork dumplings (definitely order it) - along with very fresh tasting sashimi and sushi rolls. I liked the kamikaze roll and anything with eel.

Wow, was it crowded. The very flustered host had a hard time keeping up with customers waiting for tables. At first he wouldn't take names or let anyone know how long the wait would be for a table. I actually found it kind of amusing, though it also left a couple of customers steaming.

We almost left but then just decided to cool our heels for maybe 10 to 15 minutes and I'm glad we did.

This was our second attempt at a restaurant for the night.

Our first stop was to the Hockessin Mexican restaurant Palacio Maya.

It was closed. On a Saturday night.

That's not a good sign.

We went to Palacio Maya once soon after it first opened. The waiter couldn't speak English, which made things a little challenging. Then, toward the end of the meal, he took my daughter's plate as she was, fork in hand, still trying to eat off of it. He instantly dumped it in the trash and didn't even ask if we wanted to box the leftovers.

The kids nicknamed the place "Starvation Nation" and we never went back, which is too bad, because we live in Hockessin and eat a lot of Mexican food.

We've gone to Palacio Maya twice in the last three months and were very pleased with both the food and the service. Everyone from the host to the busboy spoke English.

Lots of things in the Hockessin area were closed on Saturday due to a huge power outage--maybe that is why Palacio Maya was closed. We went out to dinner and had to drive awhile until we found something that was open. When we have eaten at Palacio Maya, the food has been good--the taco salad is very yummy. I don't think Okura has particularly great sushi, however their small private rooms are fun to eat in.

We went to Placio Maya for dinner and we would never go back. They charged us for refills for coffee. The place has a weird atmosphere.

Okura is, hands down, the best place in the area for sushi. It's always fresh and the quality is the best.

I called Palacio Maya and they are still in business. I guess they were closed because of a power outage. I'm still glad we went to Okura.
