More pizza ponderings

A little late on blogging today, sorry. I'm not a slacker, just had a few stories to finish writing.
So I finally got a cheese pizza from Tony's Cafe on Possum Park Road and Paper Mill Road. I've been hearing about this place for some time.
My thoughts: Take-out pizza doesn't travel all that well. See, here's the thing: Even if the crust is super crispy when it's removed from the oven, by the time the pizza is packed into a box - and driven some distance, the pie will begin steaming. Bye-bye crispy. Moral of the story: Don't buy a pizza in Newark and then eat it in Hockessin.
But Tony's has a very nice thin crisp and I like the oregano flavor in the sauce. It was good pizza, but I think it may be better to eat it there. I find Tony's intriguing -it was crowded and the Italian guys at the counter were sweet. I plan to go back soon and try the pizza again. Right now, though, I think Pizza by Elizabeths still has the best pizza in Delaware.

We eat there all the time. It is a great little joint. You can bring in beer or wine from the liquor store next door. Good salads, excellent pizza--the tomato pie is wonderful--tasty pasta, and even nice desserts, which we rarely get. The place is often crowded for dinner. They need a bit more space. The cooks and wait staff are always friendly and helpful.

Are you nuts? Cio Pizza or Nicola's has better pizza than Pizza by Elizabeths.

Ciao pizza might rank among the worst pizza on the east coast. Tony's is where it's at for pizza anywhere near kirkwood highway. You HAVE to eat it there to get the real experience of the dough. If you want a take out pie you might as well order Dominos.

I eat at both Tony's and Pizza by Elizabeth's a lot. There's no comparison between the 2. Tony's is just plain ol' pizza. I'm a pizza "common sewer" and I don't see that Tony's is anything special. The people working there make it special. They are SO nice. I love Pizza by Elizabeth's for just about everything. Hands down THE BEST cream of tomato soup anywhere, create your own pizza with the best crust, the mushroom duxelle is to die for, and the desserts, don't even get me started. They are incredible. (Hint: Get the Tres Leches Cake the next time you're there. What an unusual treat!)
One negative I can say about Pizza by Elizabeth's-their servers aren't always the nicest around. I took out of town guests there, after raving about it. They had a tiny baby with them who threw up on the floor while we were there. They were incredibly rude to us over it, and threw a sponge at the baby's dad to clean up the mess. They refused to help and said "We're not allowed to touch that!!!!" Never sure if that was true or not but I think of that crazy incident every single time I go in there. I always pray I don't get sick while I'm there!

What the heck is "mushroom duxelle" ? Tony's has the BEST pizza around. Perhaps Elizabeth has better foo-foo pizza for the Greenville crowd.

Mushroom duxelle {pronounce it dook-SEHL)is a mixture of finely chopped mushrooms, shallots and herbs slowly cooked in butter until it forms a thick paste. It's used to flavor sauces, soups - pizzas, etc.
