A Second Helpings reader yesterday mentioned Serendipity, a very cool, 72-seat waterfront restaurant in Oak Orchard. (210 River Road • Oak Orchard 302-945-3600)
I have indeed stumbled across this fun restaurant - they offer a spectacular view of the Indian River Bay as well as an interesting, and pretty good, appetizer called a crab pretzel. The restaurant also sold chocolate covered candy apples - decorated with gummy worms - around Halloween.
In 2005, owner Matthew Rydzynski hung more than 100 paper rainbow-colored Asian style umbrellas upside down from the ceiling. He also had lavender napkins on the table to match the yards of pink, purple, blue and lavender tissue lame that also decorated the room. Matthew was always changing the decor so I'm not sure what's up there now. But it is worth a visit.

Where in Delaware is Oak Orchard and how do you get there? Thanks
Oak Orchard is in Sussex County.
Here's the earlier posting from a reader:
There are tons of hidden gems in Sussex County if you venture about 5 miles away from Route 1. For instance, go down Rt. 24 about 8 miles and make a left at the Indian Museum, go about 3 miles till you come to a "T" in the road and make a right. About a block down on the left is a Fabulous restaurant called "Serendipity's". It is on the Indian River with wonder table-side views and a very ecclectic atmosphere. The menu is a variety of seafood, pasta, veal, chicken and even good ol' fashion favorites like meatloaf - (which by the way if WONDERFUL). Give this place a try - you WILL NOT be disappointed. They serve Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. Serendipity Restaurant, River Road, Oak Orchard, DE (302) 945-3600.

I HAD to write this... I just dined here today and had a terrible experience. It started with the smell of sewer gases throughout the restaurantand a slippery puddle of water in the front bar area (leaking from the air conditioner in the ceiling above). The experience went downhill from there !!! The salad had a dark hair in it (so it didn't match any of ours)... The waitress announced that it was her first day & her service was horrible. She apparently never worked in a restaurant of this type before and she apparently has never learned the basics of being a server (you would think even if she ever dined out she would have picked-up some basics, like clearing the dirty dishes when the diners have completed a course - or remembering to come back to the table to take your order AFTER you have your drinks.) I ordered their crabcakes (fried) ($24.95) and they came out quite sometime later BROILED (and slightly dark on top). Strangely, the waitress had returned to the table before these were served to confirm that I wanted them fried... Perhpas when she got back to the kitchen someone told her to just serve them broiled and see if you get away with it. The bathrooms smelled horrible. The ladies' room toilet was overflowing, and our female guests from out of towm had to use the SMELLY men's room. (You know that "piss on the floor smell"...) The temperature in the bathrooms (no exaggeration)had to be over 100 degrees.) The waitress told us the vegetables were broccoli and carrots and after we ordered broccoli, came back to tell us that she was wrong - they did not have broccoli. THe steamed carrots that were served looked to be about three days old. I originally wanted to order the fried flounder, however, after the server told me it was frozen as opposed to fresh, I changed my order... The waitress informed me that the flounder has always been frozen at every restaurant she has ever worked at.... Somehow, I don't picture Big Fish Grill on Route 1, serving ANY frozen flounder... I hate to say this, but this "best kept secret" would be best kept just that way - SECRET !!!! Oh, by the way, my crab cakes were very small, burned, (again, not prepared as ordered), and not very impressive. I would NOT recommend this restaurant - especially at these prices.... One more thing... during most of the time we were the only ones in the restaurant... ,aybe we should have gotten a clue from that - they certainly could not excuse the poor food and service because they were overly busy... Also, a very RUDE "hostess" seated us right next to the other group already in the restaurant when she could have placed us a couple tables away for everyone's privacy & comfort...
